LONDON'S TRAMWAYS.

A correspondent writing upon London's tramway system, stated that the tares charged were upon the whole lower than those charged for similar distances. It is pointed out, however, by Mr. C. V. Gardner that a deficit of £170,000 upon the running of the tramways for the year 1027-28 had to be made good out of the rates. This deficit was added to the liabilities of the local authority, while the G.O.C. was making a sufficient profit to purchase and scrap several of the smaller systems in the London County Council area and to negotiate the purchase of underground railways.
