Briclgewater Square, recentlv thrown open to the public under the auspices of the City c>l London Corporation, takes its name from the Earls of Bridtjeivater. whose town residence occupied most of the site in the 17th century. The house, which fronted the Barbican, with prounds extending north over the present Farm Street, was totally destroyed by tiro in April. 168". during its occupancy by .John Ktterton. the third earl, when his two infant heirs, Charles. Viscount Brackley. and his second sou. Thomas, perished in the flame*.
