PLEADS AN ALIBI.
MAN CHARGED WITH CRIME.
GOODS SOLD TO PAWHBROKSHS
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL,
Stating that he had been at the pictures with a lady friend, James Antona Walllngford Fleming (25), seaman, made a complete, denial at the Police Court this morning that lie was guilty of breaking and entering the premises of (jleorgo Wakelin, in Chancery Street, and stealing an overcoat valued at £4 and also a gramophone, suitcase and other articles valued at £15, the property of Fay Cooper, a typiste. In the charge, which was made before Mr. W. R. MeKean, S.M., the date was .January 15. Fleming was arrested five days later. Accused was identified by pawnbrokers to whom he had sold a portion of the stolen goods the day after he was alleged to have committed the crime. A brace and bit and a pair of rubber gloves were found under the mattress in the room where Fleming was staying at an Auckland hotel.
A plea of not guilty was entered and accused was committed for trial.
A further charge was made of stealing a gramophone and twelve records, valued at £15 19/, the property of the Farmers' Trading Company. Accused elected to be dealt with by jury and was remanded to the 31st on this charge. Bail was fixed at £150.
