ANNUAL CONFERENCE. At the second annual conference of the New Zealand section of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain, held at Auckland University College, the chairman, Professor T. H. Easterfield, delivered an. address on "The Training of a Chemist."'
Officers for the coming year were elected as follows: —Chairman, Professor T. H. Easterfield (Nelson) ; hon. secretary, W. R Mummery (Wanganui) ; committee, Dr. H. E. Annette (Walkato), Messrs. W. Donovan (Wellington), A. M. Wright (Christchurch), R. Gardiner (Dunedin). During the afternoon a visit was paid to the Auckland City water filtration plant at Titirangi. In the evening, at a joint meeting with the Auckland Chemical Society, and other local chemists, a discussion was held on : (1) The present and future status of chemists in New Zealand, and (2) the question of the. registration of chemists. In discussing the present and future status of the profession in New Zealand, relationship to the public was mentioned) by several speakers, and the necessity for a suitable title was stressed, in order that th* public might be able to distinguish between the analytical, consulting and technological chemist, and the pharmacist, dispensing chemist, and the druggist. The necessity for registi ition was agreed to unanimously. The chemists in attendance were representative of the profession in universities, technical collees, research institutes. Government laboratories, meat freezing Industry, dairying industry, fertile —rs industry, and analysts in private pr .ciiee.
