CONGRESS IN AUCKLAND.
OPENING ON THURSDAY.
VARIED PROGRAMME ARRANGED
The New Zealand Institute will open its annual Science Congress 011 Thursday next. Scientists from all parts of the Dominion will be present, and it is expected the assembly . will number a hundred.
A programme covering five days will open with tlfe assembly of members at the University College, Hall, Princes Street, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, followed by an invitation by the president and council of the Auckland Institute to visitors to attend morning tea. At 1.30 p.m. a visit will be made to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, in the Domain, and at 3.15 p.m. members and their friends will leave the museum by motor buses for the Ellerslie racecourse, where they will be the guests of the Auckland Racing Club at afternoon tea and during a subsequent inspection of the gardens, conservatories and nurseries. The Congress will be officially opened at 8 o'clock the same evening in the University College Hall, the speakers being the deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entriean, the president of the Auckland Institute, Mr. H. E. Vaile, and the president of the New Zealand Institute, Mr. B. C. Aston, who will deliver his inaugural address. Professor D. M. Y. Someryille, professor of mathematics at \ ictoria University College, will be presented during the evening with the Hector Medal. Sections of the congress will meet'for the first time at 9.30 011 Friday morning. These are: Physics and chemistry section, of which Dr. W. P. Evans is chairman: geology and geography (Dr. J. Henderson); biology (Dr. W. B. BenInini); agriculture and forestry (Professor (t. S. Peren); anthropology and history (Mr. H. D. Skinner); and social science and economics (Professor A. H. Tccker). Section meetings will be continued on Friday afternoon, and in the evening a public address, "The Inheritance of Mental Qualities" will be delivered in the University College Hall, by Professor Benliam. Joint sectional meetings of the institute have been provisionally fixed for Saturday morning, and at 1.30 p.m. there will be an excursion to the Waitakere Ranges, and the Niliotupu catchment area; and also a launch excursion on the Waitemata. arranged by Mr. W. Cecil Leys and friends. A conversazione will be held in the college hall at 8 p.m. on Saturday, when guests will be received by Mr. Ashton and by Mr. and Mrs. Vaile. Dancc music and a musical programme has been arranged by Professor .T. 0. Sperrin-Jolinson and Mr. H. Gohlie. A special church service will be held in St. Mary's Cathedral on Sunday evening. the preacher being the Rev. Canon H. K. Archdall, Pud during that afternoon visitors will Tie ehtertained at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Vaile, "Glade Hall," Oillies Avenue. A public address by Dr. E. Kidson, Dominion meteorologist, "Foreca sting V» eatlier." will be delivered on Monday evening in the University College Hall, following an all-day meeting of sections. 011 the afternoon of Tuesday, Anniversary Day, the congress will conclude it? programme with an excursion to Rangitoto Island.
