An American named Karlener was caught by Customs officers at the frontier between France and Belgium with pearls worth 1,000,000 francs hidden in a small bag.

Karlener was convicted, the pearls were confiscated and he was fined £14,000, that sum including costs. His attempt to smuggle the pearls cost hiin ' £23,000 in all.
