HELPING UNEMPLOYED.
MOUNT EDEN'S GOOD RECORD SPENT £14,000 IN TWO YEARS. "I was hoping we would get at leapt £1000," said the Mayor of Mount Eden (Mr. E. H. Potter) last evening when announcing to the Borough Council the result of the application to the Government for subsidy on relief work expenditure. The Government stated it was prepared to subsidise work fifty per cent up to £500, providing the council would spend £500 from its own funds. The Mayor pointed out that the council had spent about £14,000 during the past two years, and had always paid full wages, refusing to take advantage of the lower rate fixed for Government work for the unemployed. Much of the work was reproductive, and the council had been faithfuly served by the men it had employed. Under the circumstances he thought the Government's present offer was too meagre. The council decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor, who promised to communicate with the Premier, and see if something could not be done.
