CHECK OX SETTLEMENT.
The Hon. .T. G. Coates met a number of settlers of Waikoukou Valley, regarding the planting with pine trees on en area of between 2000 and 3000 acres, part of the Riverhead ,forestry reserve. The settlers eaid they hoped '"this land would be taken up by farmer* in the near future, and that"such needed conveniences as a t»chool. post office' and electricity would be obtainable. Parte of the area were now planted with pine tree«. Coate? said it was neeessarv that a forestry reserve should be near,"Auckland. but lie had no idea that the area was so suitable for farming, and thai planting would hinder the dtvclopnifii 1 of settlement. He was afraid nothing could now be done to help the settlers.
