MOTUIHI PARK.
VISITORS' ACCOMMODATION.
TEMPORARY BUILDINGS
ERECTED.
CONTROLLING REGULATIONS.
"Numerous applications are being made by picnic parties for permission to make use of the Motuihi marine park," said the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, thi« morning. He added that several thousands had already been to the resort since it was opened last Saturday, and that launch and yacht parties had visited the beaches on all parts of the island. Dressing shelters for bathers and temporary provision "for sanitary purpose* has been made under the direction of the City Council, but it will probably be next holiday season before a building scheme can be prepared and carried out for the permanent requirements of the public. The facilities at present provided, said the Mayor, were intended only to meet immediate needs, and it should be remembered that there were many other seaside resorts which were no better situated, Although they had been in use for a number of years. Recalling that it was only two and a-half months since the announcement was made by the late Prime Minister that it was the Government's intention to hand over Motuihi to the citizens of Auckland to be developed as a marine park, Mr. Baildon said negotiations had since been necessary to arrange with the Health Department and the Department of Agriculture for the erection of a quarter mile of galvanised iron fencing as a barrier to separate the quarantine station from the park. A water supply had been instnlled, and a pumping plant established to pump water to the highest point of the inland, from which it gravitated to the beach.
Regulations for the control of the island would have to be made, continued the Mayor, to prohibit guns and dogs, and to prevent the lighting of fires. It would also be essential to prohibit the removal of plants or small trees.
