MELEE NEAR HOTEL.

William Robert Mountfield (37), * well-dressed, slightly-built man, and John Ryan (34), not so well dressed, but a much bigger man. stood side br side in the dock at the Police Court this -morning, each being charged with fighting in the railway entrance last evening. Ryan said he remembered nothing of the affair, while Mountfield pleaded not guilty. The arresting constable stated that he saw Ryan rush at the other man. Mountfield afterwards being knocked over backwards on the footpath. Mountfield tried to kick Ryan. t Mountfield toid the magistrate he was struck by Ryan and immediately complained to the constable. He denied attempting to kick Ryan. The police admitted that Mountfield had complained about Byan. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said Ryan v.-as a frequent visitor at the Police Court recently. He did not work, but spent his time hanging about a hotel at the foot of Queen Street. "Fines and terms of imprisonment seem to make 110 difference to you," Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., told Ryan in fining him £5, or one month's imprisonment. Ryan, he added, had a long list of convictions. He was also prohibited. 111 dismissing the charge against Mountfield the magistrate said he probably had some feeling against Kyan, who had first assaulted him.
