MATERNAL WELFARE.

OOTfcOOK IK HEW ZEALAND. INTENTIONS OF MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. That he wae intensely interested in maternity hospital work and intended to make a careful study of the Palmerston North institution, was stated by the Minister of Health, Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, when in Palmerston North.

In some parts of New Zealand, the Minister said, mothers were not getting the same consideration from hospital boards as in other parts, and that state of things should be remedied. The mortality rate in New Zealand was not correctly appreciated, and it was said that the position was grossly exaggerated. He hoped that was so, but in any case a comparison of figures from other countries was not worth much. New Zealand had a long way to go before it could be complacent about its maternal death rate, and he wanted to see the position better than it was.
