ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

L.S.D.—Goshawk was scratched for the Auckland cup at 11.55 a.m. on the day of the race.

\ aluation proved a cut above the hacks opposed to him in the second division of the Tapu Handicap, with the exception of Good Boy, who carried top weight, and was made a lot of use of. A. Tinkers gelding finished on in good style, and is likely to win further races before the country circuit is concluded. ■

Liaison went a fair race when she finished second to High Finance in the Flying Handicap on Saturday. Higa Finance soon ran to the front," and setting a fast pace had Liaison doing her best throughout the race. Still the Te Awamutu mare hung on well, although she had had enough when the post was reached.

After racing in the lead until the field entered the straight, Glenstar failed to withstand a challenge from Maori Boy over the last furlong of the Waitakaruru Handicap, and the last-named defeated him comfortably by a couple of lengths. Glenstar, who has not done a great amount of racing, is a good tvpe of hack, and he should do Tjetter as the season progresses.

The Pukekohe sportsman. Mr. W. Roulston, has nominated Royal Doulton and Haviland for the Egmont meeting. Royal Doulton we* not raced at the Thames meeting, where the handicapper certainly handed out to her all the weight she was entitled to and a bit over. Haviland is a hack, and may show up in a short distance event.

Le Choucas, who ran third in the Goldfields Cup on Saturday, was made a solid favourite for the Thames Plate yesterday, and the Magpie gelding had every chance, but at the finish went under to the consistent Wenday. In the straight Le Choucas looked to have the race won, but despite hard riding by H. Goldfinch he could not withstand Wenday'a challenge.

The well-bred Envoy went close to losing his maiden status yesterday when he contested the Kopu Handicap. He was made a good favourite, and did well to get second, as he was well back in the early part, and had a lot of ground to make up. By Absurd—Bronze, he is a particularly well-bred gelding, and brought a big price when purchased as a yearling.

Bizarro scored decisively in the Highweight Handicap on the opening day and never looked like getting beaten, Hie track work had been good for eome weeks past, and he paid a fair price, considering the recent form of those opposed to him. Owner J. Ross turned the chestnut gelding out in first-class condition. Hβ started twice on the second day, but Glenstar was too good for him in the County High-weight Handicap, and beat him easily at the finish.

Archeen ran a solid race in the Hauraki Plains Handicap and finished very fast on the outside over the final furlong, eventually runing third to Modest Boy and Ohinemuri tne dead-heaters. On the second day the Marble Arch gelding scored nicely in the Farewell Handicap and returned a fair price. A. Tinker turned Archeen out in rare condition, and he should soon get on the winning list again.

The victory registered by High Tide in the Turua Handicap wae ymte convincing, as the chestnut eon of Hyllus and Waiutu was badly placed when half the journey had been covered and once round the home turn High Tide put in a well-sustained run and got up to defeat Roman Pearl by a neck. This gelding is looking a much improved hack, and has a good turn of speed.

Envoy was running on at the finish of the Puriri Handicap on the first day at the Thames and was sent out favourite in the Kopu Handicap on the concluding day. He did not get a good run over the middle stages of the race, but was putting in great work at the finish, and Footpad only defeated him by a narrow margin. Envoy can be still improved and looks like being an early winner.

In his last start at the Auckland Christmas meeting, Mussie had one of his legs cut, and he had to be eased up after the meeting. He was taken to the Thames meeting and started in the Turua Handicap yesterday, So much money came for him that he finished up a solid favourite, but weight of money did not assist him, and he came home in third place. Mussie has only to keep right to win a hack event or two.

The Paper Money mare High Finance is not a real good sprinter, and to beat her over six furlongs at a difference of 221b is nothing smart. That is what Subdivision did yesterday in the President's Handicap, but he did it well and showed enough pace to be in front of Mr. Earl's mare when the straight was entered. Subdivision was in at the minimum, 7.0, and as he had carried 8.12 and won the Puriri Handicap on Saturday in 1.15, he looked nicely handicapped to win again. He is a useful sort, and will always have a chance over sprint distances.

Tn the Goldfields (up Flying Juliet had the race run to suit her, "as they did not go particularly fast over the "first couple of furlongs. She was soon in front, and although VVendav was disputing the lead with her as they crossed the top, the Romeo mare finished on gamely, but she had to be ridden out to win by less than a length. On the second day she finished third to Wenday and Le Choucas, after being we n durinjr the early part of the race. She evidently found her weight juet a little too much for her. However, her form at the meeting suggests that she wilt be hard to beat at the future country

The Matamata hack Leitrim came in for solid backing in the Paiawai Handicap on the opening day, but could not do better than run a moderate third, after having everything in his favour throughout the race.

High Tide won the Turua Handicap yesterday at the Thames in good style, and returned a fair price. At one stage he was a good way back, but he had improved his position before reaching the straight, although then he had a few lengths to make up. In the straight he put a lot of dash into his effort, and ended up a good winner from Roman Pearl, with Mussie in third place.
