BLAZE AT WHANGAREI.

DANGER OF ENGINE SPARKS.

STAFF MAKE GOOD SAVE

(By Telegraph.—Own Corre«pondent.)

WHANGAREI, this dav

Sparks from an engine ignited the poilite covering of a chimney at the Whangarei railway cleaning shed early this morning. Two cleaners, whd were on duty, and the driver of the late train from Auckland quenched the outbreak by means of a hose which is used for washing out engines.

The brigade had an exciting time reaching the scene of the fire. An engine was left in Station Road, and firemen plunged across the railway lines past engines and offices and over stacks of timber and pipes until the shed was reached.

It is estimated that Mie damage will not amount to more than £10, although had the fire got a proper hold the consequences would have been serious.
