RESERVE AT DEVONPORT
RECLAMATION AT NGATARINGA AREA FOR RECREATION. DEVELOPMENT OF SCHEME. The coldly official announcement in the Government Gazette that the Devonport Borough Council has been authorised to reclaim additional land at Ngataringa Bay to form a borough reserve, refers to a scheme to provide play-spaces for Devonport which originated a quarter of a century ago. At that time the tide made Ngataringa Bay quite a picturesque locality at high "water, and it was realised that the shallow estuary could be reclaimed at a comparatively moderate cost.
Steps were taken at that stage to have a portion of the bay area vested in the Devonport Borough Council for the purpose of forming , a reserve, and the riparian rights were extinguished by arrangement, most of the land being owned by the Hon. E. W. Alison, who was a keen advocate of the scheme. Thus an area of 19 acres was secured.
The best progress to develop the area lms been made during the past twelve months as the result of a forward policy launched by the Mayor of Devonport (Mr. E. Aldridge) and his council, while the residents of the borotigh have assisted in the collection of funds. Already sufficient land has been reclaimed to provide football grounds and two tennis courts, and a shed for accommodation has been built.
The intention is to proceed with the scheme until all the available area is converted into a reserve, one which will be of inestimable value for Devonport's growing athletic and recreational needs.
