KERBSIDE PETROL PUMPS.

MORRINSVLLLE DECISION.

COUNCILLORS' LICENSES

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

MORRINSVILLE, Friday.

A degree of finality has been reached in the controversial question of kerbside pumps, which was again discussed by the Morrinsville Borough Council last evening. The position is now that petrol pumps may be erected on kerbs with the exception of a restricted portion in the middle of the town as formerly. At the last council meeting the Mayor (Mr. W. McPherson) gave notice of his intention to move that the by-law dealing with the installation of petrol pumps be rescinded. This, he said, would leave the way open for the recommendation of a special committee that the pumps be abolished. Last evening, however, the Mayor said that since the committee had met a councillor had applied for and had been granted a permit to erect a filling station on private property, and in view of the suspicion which might be created, although without justification, he did not propose to move his motion. Mr. Chapman said it was an unfortunate thing that two councillors were interested in the sale of benzine. He moved that no further licenses be granted and that the present holders be notified that after March 31, 1930, the licenses be not renewed. Mr. Osborne characterised the motion as ridiculous. Mr. Reason asked why the council should take upon itself the responsibility of legislating for the year 1930. The Mayor said the motion would restrict trade. The motion on being put was lost by by five votes to two.
