His hand was shaking as he held his worn-looking hat. _ One of .Maxey's misfortunes was his inclination to drink too heavily, and he miid he had procured a bottle'of medicine to assist in breaking himself of the llHlllf.
Sub-Inspector McCarthy eaid the prisnner had <i 7 previous convir-tions. He lad been on "the island" and was in an Unsound state of health.
Maxey was sentenced to three months Ivan Koos, a Dalmatian, of wiry phy-ique and hardened by his life in the open, pleaded lie had not been guilty of misdemeanour, although a constable had found him at 2 o'clock this mornin" Sleeping on an embankment. Taken to the police station he spent the rest of the night in quarters and had a smile as he stepped into the dock Nub-Tnspeetor McCarthy said Roos had been sleeping out for the past fortnight, and had evidently lnade up his mind to exist without work. He had been arrested for the same offence on several occasions. "There is only one possible thing to do with that class of man and that is to put him away for a lengthv period" eaid Mr. Hunt. S.M. * Roos was sentenced to three months. The magistrate observed that men of accused's type could be kept at "the island" for £1 a week, and do useful work.
