FALSE INCOME RETURN

Prosecution Of Sir Walter

Cockerline Dropped.

SERIOUS STATE OF HEALTH,

(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, November 8.

The application for the prosecution of Sir Walter Cockerline, on the charge of making false income tax returns, for hearing at the Newcastle Assizes, has been dropped.

The state of his health is so serious that the doctors thought he should not be subjected to the ordeal of a trial. The penalties of £300,000 imposed on him, iii addition to the back income tax, have been paid.

Sir Walter Herbert Cockerline, who was knighted in 1922, is a former Sheriff of the City of Hull, and a prominent shipowner. His firm, W. H. Cockerline and Co., owns various trading steamers, and he is registered owner of two large [vessels. He was charged with making false returns, involving £107,000. He was committed for trial on September 27, in spite of the prosecution's desire to withdraw the case on account of the defendant's precarious state of health, and also the fact that he offered to pay £300,000 penalty in addition to the first-named amount..
