WHAT OF ORAKEI?

PROPOSED GARDEN SUBURB.

ONE HOUSE STANDS SENTINEL.

One lone house standing like a sentinel on the headland east of Hobson Bay invites inquiry as to when the proposed garden suburb of Orakei is likely to come into being.- Some months have elapsed since the holding of the last of the two auction sales at which sections, were submitted by the Government, and yet with the one exception the 50 or 60 sections which found purchasers. remain as they were. It is presumed that the owners are waiting for the completion of the new harbour-front roadway, the reticulation' for electric light and the adding of a few other touches before proceeding with the erection of the homes that are doubtless taking shape in their minds' eyes. "Plans are now out for the next block to be opened up," said the Crown Lands Commissioner for North Auckland (Mr. O. N. Campbell) this morning, "and as soon as they have been approved by the City Council a further lot of sections will be made available at the eastern end of the settlement overlooking Okahu Bay." Mr. Campbell said the Public Works Department was making excellent headway with the road across Hobson Bay. As'for the street formation and drainage in the Orakei area, that was done before the first block was opened up. The Auckland Electric Power Board was now putting in the reticulation and it was expected that further building would be proceeded with shortly. Mr. Campbell observed that large numbers of private motor cars were already using the new roadway across Hobson Bay and proceeding thence over the roads of Orakei to the main road above Kohiiharama. As to how long would elapse before motor traffic was making free use of the new waterfront road as far as, Mission Bay was a matter for speculation. It might be two years or even less. The commissioner believes that once building commences at Orakei Abe new garden suburb will quickly show signs of taking definite shape.
