POLAND CEASES WORK.

General Strike For Increased Wages. CONFLICT WITH EMPLOYERS. ("Times" Cables.) LONDON, October 16. A general strike was proclaimed in Warsaw on Friday because the owners of industrial concerns would only agree to an increase of five per cent in wages on condition that the workers refrained from asking for further increases until July, 1929. The object of -the strike was to force the industrial leaders. to make further concessions.

At some factories work was resumed on Monday. This caused the - strike committee to hold a special meeting. It was decided again to enforce the strike.

Immediately the strikers stopped several street cars and prevented water and sewage labourers from continuing work. The personnel of all the cinemas, theatres, hospitals and sick funds have joined the strikers.

The Socialists have permitted only two officials to remain at work in Lodz. They are to organise the distribution of relief to the families of the strikers.
