LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held last night when Mr. E. F. Jones presided.

Government Reserves. —The board agreed to inspect certain Government reserves in Mount Roskill in company with an officer from the Lands Department, with a view to their being vested in the Road Board, along with others in the district.

Dedication Needed.—Certain owners of property are setting back their frontages 7ft and the board desires them to dedicate to the King the small pieces of Jknd before spending money on them with the footpaths in the same vicinity. The board will take the neeessary steps to obtain the dedication.

Boundary Road.—A letter was read from the city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, <rot- # lining the work to be done on The Drive,* a boundary road between the city and Mount Roskill. The chairman, proposed and it was agreed to spend £1200 aa the board's contribution towards the work to be done on The Drive, between Umpire Road and Bt. Andrew's Road.

Death to Mosquitoes.—Dr. I, J. Hughes advised and the board agreed to take steps for the suppression of the mosquito nuisafice in the district.

District Ranger.—Numerous complaints were received from ratepayers with rC gard to the ranger's action in impounding their cows alleging an overcharge of impounding fees. The hoard decided to appoint Mr. Bateson to the position and dispense with services of the present ranger. ' Refuse. —The Onehunga Borough Council intimated that their charge of 8/6 per ton for refuse destruction .was based 01* per ton-measurement and not weight. The chairman regarded this letter as a bomb shell, as the board understood the contract was on the- basis of weight and not otherwise. Mr. S. I. Goodall thought the board would have to increase their sanitation rate if ttrty * accepted the council way of measuring the refuse. Methodist. Property.—The trustee* of the. 'Methodist Trainings College have agreed thatfirthe Road-Board will retiinilate 'the trust boards property in Dominion, Rosd and pcovide sewers large enough to drain their Three Kings property when reticulated, they will consent to be rated on the expenditure gaiy .to carry out aueh works proportionately as the" whole of the property bears .to the total: area to be included in the reticulation scheme and will further road the Dominion Boad property within one year of the reticulation of that property being completed by the Boad. Board. The agreement will be pot into operation as soon as the legal form-' alities have been complied with.: Building . Permits.^—Fourteen permits for new buildings were issued during the fortnight of a total value of £4131. There are 26 buildings now in th? course of erection in the district.

Finance.—The general account is >ih debt £7851' 18/'. Accounts l amounting- to £40& were passed for payment.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL,

The fortnightly meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. A,E. Greenalade) presided. Condolence.—Vofces of condolence were passed to the family of the Late Mr. W, E. Richardson, ex-Mayor;, to Cr. W. C. Ellis and Mrs. Ellis on the death of their daughter Marjorie; and to the relatives of the late' Mr. Mark R. Parrish, whf* served on the old Northcote Road Board. Harbour Bridge.—lt was decided to offer congratulations to the. Auckland Harbour Bridge Association on securing' Government recognition of its efforts as the result of the petition to Parliament and application for Government - support. Thanks were recorded to the Various members of Parliament, particularly the Jfcctli Auckland, city and suburban members, and letters expressing this appreciation are to be forwarded to the Prime Minister and Mr. A. Harris, M.P. Queen Street Paving.—The Birkenhead, and Northcote Gas. Company requested Reconsideration of the claims for work done in Queen Street. The alterations carried out to gas mains, due to road reconstruction work by the council, cost the company £1850, and although the gas. reticulation had benefited to a degree, the company was a heavy loser., The manager, Mr: A. Neil, requested the opportunity of explaining the position to the council and engineer form the company's viewpoint. The matter was referred to the engineer. Sanitary Inspector.—The medical officer of health intimated; that inspector York had been transferred. to the position caretaker at Somes Island Quarantine Station. Mr. John Hughes was appointed sanitary ; inspector in bis stead, Gas Mains.—The Birkenhead and Northcote Gas Company' notified intention of opening the embankment on Sulphur Beach, from Stafford RcJad to Tennyson Street, for the purpose of laying gas mains. ;. , Armistice Service.—Hie hear approach of Armistice Day was pointed out'in a communication frm the , Northcote Women's Progressive League, which suggested that the occasion should be cominemorated by a combined outdoor serthe W arMeraorial on the- af tern on of Sunday, November, 11. The league would:, help in every way. The Mayor considered that the council should adopt the suggestion, but a. motion by'' Mr. P. J. Ryan, that the council intimate willingness to- appoint a committee to consider the matter, but that Anzac Day wae the recognised day for commemoration in New Zealand, was carried. ■ War Memorial.—A letter from Mr. A Taylor secretary of the Northcote Women s Progressive League, stated that though the Girl Guides left the Memoriad clean_each Saturday afternoon, on Sunday morning it was Very dirty and untidy, due to the behaviour ol youths and others. It was decided to refer the- eooaplaiat for i police attention.
