NEWMARKET LOANS.
POLL TO BE HELD TO-MORROW
SAFETY-ZONE CONTROVERSY.
DIVISION OF OPINION,
A bumper poll is promised to-morrow when loan proposals to raise J513,5Q0 for effecting improvements to Thorough utilities will be submitted to ratepayers of Newmarket. £11,500 of the amount is intended for drainage and reticulation works, CI2OO for alterations to the tram tracks at the junction of Khyber Pass, Broadway and Parnell Road in connection with the projected new safety zone in the triangle, and £800 for 'the reconstruction of Mortimer's Pass. More than usual interest is centring in the poll owing to the Borough Council being divided in its opinion as to the merits and demerits of the safety zone scheme. Advocates of the alteration maintain that the construction of the safety zone in the triangle will speed nip traffic through Broadway and largely eliminate .the present congestion that occurs at the tram stop at Teed's corner. On the other hand opponents to the scheme claim that the element of danger attached to the safety zone being some distance from the footpath, as it would be in the triangle, would be greater than that involved in a tram stop where the traffic is obliged to remain at the' rear of stationary trams. They also submit that the removal of the stop at Teed's corner would create a one-end shopping centre, and consequently upset property values that had grown up under present conditions for fifty years. The £ 1200 it is proposed to raise represents Newmarket's share of the cost oMhe scheme, and the .City Council will contribute the balance required to complete the alterations, a matter of £f3OO. In regard to the drainage scheme, for which the major amount is required, it is proposed to construct a branch sewer from Boston Road to join the main sewer before it reaches Hobson Bay. The work is necessary to cope with increasing storm-water and boused/drain a rre at'the northern end of the borough. The. City Council and the Mount Albert Bor- i oujrh Council are to share in the total cost. The city will also hear a propor- j lion of the cost of the work in Morti- i mer's Pass, for which tjie jemainder of j the money has been earmarked. > There are 1057 ratepayers .on the roll - of the borpngh, and the hoqrs of voting will he between 9 a.m. and.7^pan. • The 1 polling booths will be. situated at the municipal chambers and at Rev. Jasper Calder's garage in. Park Road.
