THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE CRITICS.

In reply to Mr. H. P. Taylors courteous communication, let me say my letter was not written in defence of the Auckland City Coun» cil, and I can assure him that I do not consider myself sufficiently important to be briefed on their behalf. It was written as an appeal to the citizens of Auckland to get rid of thn atmosphere of distrust and suspicion, to encourage the council to bring forward any loan proposals that they consider absolutely essential and to vote on them according to their own ideas, ignoring the propaganda of persons e\ idently seeking publicity for their own future purposes. The motion quoted by Mr. Taylor is foolish, in that it prevents a free man from voting for a measure even though he thinks it right, and must cause a lot of unemployment by delaying necessary work® until next year, when the perfect council'* to be elected. As a complete report of the Murray complaints has been given in the Press, it was unnecessary for me to waste my tira* bj attending his meetings. There may be some u- i. " l Jn - S . accusa ti°»s, but the manner ia which suspicion seems to be thrown on every member and employee of the corncil certainly tends to make me attach less w iaht to bin charges. While awaiting the reply to Mr. Murray by the people charged, I think judgment should be suspended. The present coun» cillors were elected one and a half vears ask not three and a half, as stated bv Mr. Tav.<m and I venture to prophesy that nianv 'will again be elected next year, as although they ha\e been justifiably criticised as to their n ]° & t of us are still quite convinced of their integrity. . \\\ McMILLAX.
