TIT FOR TAT
"That kitten only likes you because you play with her and give her milk, and stroke her when she sits on your knee." The words were spoken scornfully, but the person to whom they were addressed did not resent them. She was accustomed to turn over in her mind whatever people said. She admitted that this reason for the cat's liking was correct. But, she asked herself, isn't that the reason for all affection? Men and women respond to kindness and love just as animals do. No one cares for those who take no notice of them or who treat them unpleasantly. What does friendship feed upon but gratitude, mutual amiability, the happiness of knowing that someone is always glad to sec you? —L.C.
