CANADIAN FREIGHT WAR.
SHIPPERS BENEFIT. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 10 a.m.) MONTREAL, August 28. Montreal shippers have taken quick advantage of what to be a rate war between the Canadian National Steamships and the N.Z. Shipping (Jo. for freights between Montreal and N.Z. ports. Ratea were cut last week from £5 to £1 per ton, providing a great boon to shippers. The Canadian National Steamships Co. was obliged to add two freighters to carry the overflow. On Saturday the regular line ships of both companies left loaded to the gunwales. Neither company is prepared to give way, but both are stated to be ready for a conference.
