CHARMING SIMPLICITY.

On Saturday night a dance was held at the Takanini Hall for the benefit of the country queen (Miss Nina Ralph) in connection with the Papakura Catholic Queen Carnival. A large number attended and music was supplied by several local players. The supper was provided by the ladies. Mr; Sandford and partner were the winners of the spot waltz and the Mone Carlo was won by Mr. Lindaw and Miss Scally, of Auckland Amongst those present were: Mrs. E. Pope, black crepe de chine with blue trimmings; Mrs. M. Scally, figured crepe de chine frock; Mrs. Haughey, flame crepe de chine and lace; Misses Nina Ralph, turquoise blue, crepe de chine and lace; N. Dcmpsey, apple green crcpe de chine and guipure lace; J. S. Steele, apffeot crepe de chine with cream shawl; D. Laing, floral crepe de chine; C. Pope, mauve taffeta; A. Adolph, pink crepe de chine with satin ribbon; Aurioje Pope, pink crepe with flower and sating. G. Foster, peacock green satin, Silver lace; T. Scally, green georgette and silver lace; V. Pope, salmon" pink taffeta; K. Scally, pink pleated georgette; G. Browne, apricot georgette and lace; Lily Grant, black velvet and cyclamen; Molly Fleming, mauve and pink georgette; G. Bennett, sky blue silk georgette; G. McLcod, henna taffeta; D. Roberts, champagne satin beaute silk georgette skirt; G. Tliwaites, shell pink georgette, with sequins and shawl; Doris Nicholson, pink crepe de chine trimmed with lace.

There was an attendance of fully 500 at the annual children's fancy dress ball, held in the Town Hall, Otorohanga, Saturday night, of whom 200 were children in fancy costumes. The hall had been prettily decorated with suspended coloured electric lights, and a huge coloured paper bell from the centre. Prizes for the best or most original fancy costumes were awarded the following:—Betty'Kidman, rosebud; Owen Rees. kewpie; Dawn Miller, fairy; Dorecn Jeffcott, fairy; Gwen Morley, drummer; lan Thomson, pillar box; Russell Sanson, toy soldier; Jean Cameron, rainbow; Ruth Richards, Old English; Joyce Veale. Peter Pan; Ivy Low Lee, Chinese lady; and Moira Bluck, Early Victorian. Special dances were given bv the following:—Olive Hill, toe dance; Vaea-Vienna, by little girls; Jean Saunders, step dance; Jean Poynton, Spanish dance; Phillis and Helen Farmer, minuet; Gladys Wade and Margaret Kay, eachuea; Gladys . Wade, Old English dance. Mrs. A. Bell plajfcd for the solo dances and Wade's OrcVestt-a for dancing, with extras by the Rotorua Maori Orchestra. The children were served with supper in the preft.i!y-decoiat§d supper room, where the tables' ,were decorated with violets and dalfodils, wattle branches being in the window, sills* and baskets of wattle and asparagny -fern hanging from : the ceiling.

A progressive 500 afternoon was given by the Rocky Nook croquet ladies yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Young, Mrs. Hirst and Miss Lamb, as joint hostesses, dispensed a very dainty afternoon tea. The winning ladies were Mrs. Gill, Mrs. Keatley and Mrs. Carson (booby). Among the players were: Mrs. Wakley, Mrs. Tongue, Mrs. Boylance, Mrs. Morley, Mrs. A'Deane, Mrs. Watson, Mrs. S. Cole, Mrs. J. McAneny, Mrs. Aughton, Mrs. J. Empen, Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Munro, Miss Wallace.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hutchison, of Portland Road, Remuera, held a delightful "At Home" last evening, in honour of the visiting councillors of the Accountants' Society. The lounge, drawing and morning rooms, which lend themselves to artistic decorations, were decorated with brass and crystal bowls of fresh almond blossom, and marble figures holding long sprays of red and white stock. The supper table was done in crimson anemones. Bridge tables held their quota of players. Mrs. Hutchison received her guests in a smart black taffeta, made in bouffant fashion, large bow at back and Oriental lace hem. Among the guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Dawson, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Irvine, of Gisborne, Mr. and Mrs. Chambers, Mr. and Mrs. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Esam, Mr. and Mrs. Hogg (Dunedin), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Christchurch), Mi', and Mrs. Seaman, Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Davis (Palmerston North), Mr. and Mrs. Cameron, Mr. and Mrs. Gorrie, Mr. and Mrs. EUiff, Mr. and Mrs. Beaumont, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Revell (Timatu), Mr. and Mrs. Denton (Hastings), Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Hunt (Wellington), Mr. Walkley, Mr. Bayly (New Plymouth).
