SEVERAL LINES FIRMER. COAL SHARES IN DEMAND. MINING STILL DULL. Better prices were offered for a number of linen on 'Change this week, with the result that business in some stocks was done at higher figures. Colonial Sugar Refining Company's ediarot} had sales at £59 17/6, and there were sellers at that figure. Buyers of New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency stock advanced their oilers to £fO6, without business resulting. This is a' rise of 40/ in the buying rate during tin; past fewweeks, but no sellers have been disclosed. Sales were nicide of Auckland Harbour Board 5Vs per cent debentures at £I*o 10/. and «>•' under that figure could bo got for Auckland City s¥.t per cent. Oovernment inscribed 5Ys per cent Loan (1936) changed hands at £101, and Soldiers' Loan sva per cent inscribed (1933) wore transferred at £100 17/6. At last the 4Vi per cent War Loan (1930) lias firmed in sympathy with the other lines. While £98 12/6 wan offered regularly ,for the 193.H and 1939 4Ms per cent Loans, until the hist couple of days, the best quotation for the issue maturing in 1930, was £98. Then buyers advanced their offers to £98 10/, and for the loan maturing 1941, an extra 5/ was offered yesterday afternoon. The 1927-41 Loan of 4>i per cent could be placed at £98 15/. All four 5Vi per cent loans. Soulier*' and Government, are now wanted at £100 15/. Sales wore made at the last call yesterday of the 4 1 , i per cent War Loan (1938) at t'Pfl, an advance of 7/0 upon the previous buying price. Sellers came in of the oVi per cent Loan 1933. at par, and buyers offered £99. The inscribed issue was offered at £100 10.,, but buveis remained at £99.

Auckland Gas OVa per cent debentures (1935) are in regular request at £102 . r > ; . and for the 5 per cent issue, £93 could be got. Various f> per cent Local BiWies Loans are inquired for :j£loo, am! lor Mount Eden Borough debentures CIOO is the 'buying quotation for the per cent and £ 102 for the' 6 ver cent.

Banking shares showed sorne advances during the week. New South Wales shares had several transactions at £-30 5/, and there are still buyers at 5/ under that figure. Commercial Bank shares had an advance for each of the three issues. Ordinary shares, after se'lins at £1 9/9 and £1 10/, are now wanted at £1 10/3. The contributing issue (10/ paid) rose 1/, as buyers now offer 19/3. while for the preference issue £7 5/6 can be got. National Bank of Australasia shares are also firmer. Buyers now offer £18 9/ for the ordinary issue, and for the contributing shares £9 5/6 was paid. Several sales were made of Bank of New Zealand shares at £3, and buyers came in for Bank of Australasia at £14 15/. Union Bank of Australia shares are now wanted at £15 2/6.

An advance took place yesterday in the 'buying offer for Pukemiro Collieries, up to £3 7/6 being quoted, but no seller was disclosed, 'l'aupiri C'oal shares sold at £ 1 0/9, and for Westport Stockton ordinary issue 3/8 Vz wan paid. Hikurangi Collieries are still in request nt the advances noted last week. Renown Collieries could now be got for 12/6, and Waipas for 14/9. Kauri Timber shares sold yesterday afternoon at 19/, and L.0.8. Timber had inquiry at £1 10/ but sellers asked another 2/6. Sales took place of National Timber shares at 8/6. Kaiapoi Woollen ordinary shares finned a little, buyers offering I(>'6, with sellers quoting 11/3.

Inquiry set in yesterday for shares in the Victoria Nyanz.i/ Sugar Company, for which £2 4/ was offered. The same price nlso quoted by buyers of Cnion Oil and Uandle shares, but, sellers want £2 3/6. Sharlaml and Company }iad buyers at 19/6, and for Kempthorne, Prosser Drug £3 B'6 could be got. Sales took place yesterday afternoon of Newton King preference shares at 0/9. Inquiry was made for Abraham, Williams, preference issue at £4 2 '6, and Gear -Meat are wanted at £1 19 6.

National Insurance shares changed hands at 16/, and South British sold at. £3 and £3 0 3. .V number of sale.were made during the week of Xew Zealand Insurance at £2 2/6, at which rate more shares could be placed. Auckland Gas in another line that had several sales at prices ranging: from ill 3 1 to £1 3/2. fDevonport Ferry shares sold at £1 4,/. and for Iluddart, Parker Steuin buyers advanced to £2 8/9 yesterday afternoon. A sale was made tiiis week of Lewis Eady, Limited, ordinary- issue at £ ! 3'.

New Zealand Breweries, after belling at £2 3/. could now be placed at sixpence advance upon that price. The Now Zealand Breweries debentures changed hands at £1 3/11. Business was done in New Zealand Farmers' Fertiliser shares at £4 5/ and in Hayward's Pictures at £1. National Pictrues have had steady demaud at 13/, with no quoted sellers. Business was done in Sanford's ordinary issue at 19/6, and in Wilsons Cement at £1 18/6. Mining shares are still neglected. Sale* were, however, made this week of Waihi shares at 12/11, and Grand Junction at 1/4, while 0/10 has been steadily offered for Ohinemuri Mines. Electrolytic Zinc shares are now wanted at £ 1 12/0 for the ordinary shares and sixpence extra for the preference. Mount Lyell firmed a little, sales being made at £1 li>/9.
