COMMERCIAL.

TRANSACTIONS ON 'CHANGE. Inquiry is still strong for shares in banking corporations.. Sales were made this morning of Union Bank of Australia shares at £14 12/, and of Commercial Bank ordinary issue at 27/10. Buyers'still quote £48 for Bank of Ixew South Wales, and for Bank of New Zealand, 59/9 wa6 paid. Bank of Adelaide are wanted at £9 2/fl, while for National Bank of New Zealand, £6 18/ could be got. English and Scottish Bank shares finned a little, buyers offering £8 4/. There was also inquiry for Australian Bank of Commerce shares at 33/.

A sale was made to-day of Devonport Ferry at 24/9, and of Northern Steam contributing issue at 7/2. A transaction also took place in Hill and Plummet shares at 23/. Demand continues for Colonial Sugar Refining shares at £58 10/, but the seller asked another twenty shillings, and for P. and O. deferred stock buyers offered £232 at the noon call.

Waihih shares improved to-day, sales being made at 11/.

NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE.

(Received 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 26. The New York Stock Exchange again broke all records with total sales of 4,248,000 shares, surpassing the record cabled on March 13. Speculators sent enormous week-end accumulation of buying orders into the market, whirling the prices of several leaders into new high levels. General Motors again led the procession, more than half a million shares in that stock alone changing hands within five hours and selling for the new high price of 200 dollars a share. At the height of trading, shortly before the close, practically the whole market followed the upward trend.—(A. and N. 2.)

Messrs. Joseph and Company have received the following cable from their London principals, Messrs. Nathan and Trengrotiee. Tooley Street, dated March 2rt, as follow^:— New Zealand butter, 172/ per cwt. New Zealand cheese, 99/ to 100/ per cwt. Both markets quiet. Little or no business.
