HERMIT GROUP CRUISE.
MR. D. 8. WYLIE'S PLANS.
IN SEARCH OF CURIOS.
With six weeks' holiday in prospect, Mr. Douglas Stuart Wylie,.a former resident of Auckland, arrived from Sydney on the Marama to-day. Mr. Wylie, who is fond of cruising, is planning a trip to the Hermit Group, some of the more remote islands of New Guinea. It is probable that Mr. J. H. Curie, well known author and traveller, will accompany Mr. Wylie.
Last year Mr. Wylie visited New Guinea, when he collected a number of native spears and curios, together with a sintrularly hideous image of a god. Mr. Wylie presented a collection of spearheads to the Auckland Museum. He hopes to make a further collection during his stay in the Hermit Group, which is nbout 250 miles north of New Guinea. The area of the islands totals some 500 to 600 acres, one of the islands being of bnsnlt and six or seven coral. The native population is only 160 or 180, and Miere is but one white man, a plantation owner, in the group. The trip is to be n-.ade in a small boat wjiich is to be purchased in Svdney, where Mr. Wylie will join Mr. Curie. ~
