GROSS NEGLIGENCE.
Recent Mine Disaster In
Canada.
MANAGEMENT BLAMED.
OTTAWA, March 25.
The coroner's jury which inquired into the Hollinger mine fire disaster at Timmins, Ontario, in which 39 men lost their lives, found that there had been gross negligence on the part of the management and operating executives. They were blamed for permitting rubbish to be dumped in the old stopes.
The fire occurred, on February 11. Forty-seven men were trapped in the mine and the smoke hindered the work of rescue. Two relief trains carrying gasmasks broke all speed records from Toronto to Trimmins, a distance of 452 miles, when rushing to the scene with equipment for the rescuers.
