MORRINSVILLE AFFAIRS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

TRAFFIC CONTROL.

The aforrinsville Borough Council met on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Mr. S. S. Allen) presiding. The substitution of white lines for the existing "silent policemen" in the main street, for the guidance of traffic, was strongly advocated by Councillor Osborae. He was opposed to the present method as the corners were awkward for vehicles to take on account of the narrowness of the main street. White lines and directing arrows drawn on the road would enable traffic to take an easier and less dangerous sweep, and would pr&ve* In his opinion, far more satisfactory. He imrved that the suggestion be reported on by the Works Committee.

The Mayor supported the present system. Vehicles travelling at a reasonable speed could quite easily negotiate the silent policemen, which, In /act, served the purpost of checking excessive speed. Councillors Chapman and Donald expressed similar opinions. On a division being taken the motion was lost.

A recommendation that the balance standing to the credit of the baths loan account (£l7) 'be expended in concreting under the stands was approved. Advice was received from the council's solicitors that the council could legally spend a portion of the roadlng loan surplus on ,. J ?,* ac Avenue, subject to statutory validation being obtained next session. The enginer's report on the matter, which strongly recommended improving the road was approved. '

The matter of providing suitable recognition or the many services rendered to the borough bv Mr. D. Coghill was again before the council, when a report on the proposal to erect memorial gates, to be known as the Coghill Gates, at the entrance to the Recreation Ground, was submitted by the council's representatives on the Beautifying Committee. The matter Is to be further considered when the estimates are brought down nsxt month.
