TROTTING,

WELLINGTON CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING AT HUTT.

NATIVE STAR BEATS ELZEAR.

MARCH HANDICAP TO JOLLY PET.

TOTALISATOR £6000 UP.

(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.*)

PETONE, Saturday.

The Wellington Trotting Club's autumn meeting attracted a big crowd to Hutt Park to-day, the weather and the track conditions being ideal. The fields were on the small side, but some interesting racing was witnessed. The totalisator handled £27,139 compared with £20,089 for 1927 autumn meeting, an increase of £6050.

Free Advice, with Bryce behind, was made a hot favourite for the Petone Maiden, but Native Hero, who is trained on the course, never made a race of it. The winner, who showed promise at South Wairarapa, led all the way, having six lengths' advantage at the finish. Free Advice headed off His Lordship in the straight.

The Kaitoke Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, was another poor contest, as Real the Great, who went steadier than for some time, practically led all the way and all the eight starters tangled badly at some stage of the race. The winner, in going to the lead, broke when going out of the straight the first time, but he then settled down and had the race won a long way from home. There was a good battle for second place, Petroleuse just getting the verdict from Elzear.

Pageant and the locally trained Zella, monopolised the betting in the Improvers' Handicap. Zella, Vikota and Hard Knocks lost ground at the start, but Zella quickly got into her stride. Glenaray, Pageant, Athlone and Zella formed the leading division for most of the journey. Zella, who was going steadily, looked certain to win after half the journey had been covered, but Pageant, who waa well driven by Tomkinson, put in his effort in the straight, beating Glenaray, who had led most of the way, by a length, Zella being much further back, with Athlone fourth. Rey Logan was made a much better favourite than Jean McElwyn for the March Handicap, which proved another very disappointing affair. High Jinks was slow to move off and Equality refused to budge. Jolly Pet began very smartly and soon put a big break on the Lmgfield, Dillon Gold and Jean McElwyn being his nearest attendants. Rey Logan put little dash into his effort and was soon in a hopeless position. Jean McElwyn caught Dillon Gold in the straight, but had no chance with Jolly Pet, who won without being extended there being four length* between second and third.

A hot favourite prevailed, when Pre# Advice, driven by J. Bryce, scored an easy win in the Novice Dash Handicap. Driftway was Hie early leader from Prince Audo and Rongonui , the favourite, going nicely in fourth position. Free Advice struck the fromt three furlongs from homo and was not bothered. He won by two lengths from Bin gen Wood, who went a fine race after losing a little ait tibe start. Rolock was eight lengths behind Bingwn Wood and Rongonui. Little Author took no port in the contest, and several others lost their chances at the start.

The High-class Trot provided a spectacular contest, but over the laat three furlongs, Native Star, who was a pronounced favourite, always looked like the winner. Bonny Spec led from Native Star and Cannon ball, and there was no change in this order until they were three furlongs from home, when Native Star darted through on the rails and stopped there. Although she did not go out kindly, once the Dunedinowned mare got into her stride die trotted a fine race, easily accounting for the rest of the field. Bonny Spec also went a good race, but spoilt his chance by breaking in straight. Native Star appears to like the course, as she won at the last meeting. She was driven a heady race by M. B. wards.
