POSITION IN SAMOA.
RESERVE lOR.CE AT APIA.
MARINES FROM THE DIOMEDE
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
SUVA, March 22
The H.M.s. Diomede has reached Suva from Samoa, where the ship left 50 marines as a reserve force. Commander John H. Godfrey, of the Diomede, was left at Apia as senior naval officer, next in command to the Administrator, Sir George Richardson, who is now awaiting his successor. The marines were in charge of Captain E. Bowring, of the Dunedin, with Captain F. S. Selby Tuppen as second in command. To all appearances the position was quiet, and it was evident that the Administration did not consider there was any danger or they would not have permitted the Diomede to leave.
It is also reported that the Mau have returned to their villages for the most part, but they will not meet the Administration in conference.
