ELIMINATING ROUNDS
Democratic Candidate
Announced.
STALEMATE PROBABLE,
WASHINGTON, January 26.
The first evidence that the usual practice in American politics of letting the strongest contenders for Presidential honours negate each other, is seen in the announcement that Mr. J. A. peed, member of the
Senate for Missouri, is to be a candidate for the Democrat Presiden- , tial nomination. His friends have made the interesting announcement that ho is in the contest "to the finish." Strong intimations have been Riven that Mr. lteed, who is the first import ant
figure to contest Mr. Alfred Smith's prominent position in the Democrat party, will mako it a "knock-down and drag-out" fight. Mr. Reed will begin a speaking campaign throughout the United States on February 12. Observers are already beginning to see the strong possibilities that the Democrats will be compelled to select a candidate by way of compromise, since the most prominent aspirants seem likely to stalemate each other.
