ACCIDENTAL,
• A Bitting of the Coroner's Court was held yesterday afternoon presided over by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., Coroner. In the case of Samuel Henry Elmore, i married man, aged 57, who was killed through being struck by a passenger train outside the gaol at Mount Eden early on . the morning of January 17, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
The inquest was conducted by Sergeant Flanagan, of Mount Eden, and Mr. Inder appeared for the relatives of the deceased.
The driver of the train stated that he •aw the man walking along the side of the line and gave a long blast of tlio whittle, but deceased took no notice. The train continued on at the same spied, and when it was nearly up to the Man he stepped on to the centre of the traok. Witness gave a short blast of the whistle and applied Iks brakes. In the evidence of identification pre' viomly given, it was stated that deceased was deaf. Mr. Inder yesterday called evidence to contradict this.
The inquiry into the death of Mrs. Ethel Brittain, who was killed >y a pas* lenger train on the Argyle Street crossing, Morningside, early on the after* noon of December 24, was concluded, and a verdict of accldentaly death returned,
Knocked Down by Horse. Sergeant Rock, of Newmarket, conducted an inquest concerning the death of Francis Carleton, single, aged about 60, who was killed on Tuesday afteraOon through being knocked down by a bolting hone in the Great South Road. Mr. R. N. Moody appeared for the relative of the deceased.
Several witnesses expressed the opinion that the horse became afrrid of a ■team roller and bolted. A man attempted to stop the horse, which was harnessed to a milk float, and this canted it to go on to the footpath where deceased was working. Deceased was hard of hearing and had his back to the approaching horse. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental death.
