MONKEYS AT NEW REGENT

With a perceptible stir of interest the large audience at the New Regent last evening eat up to take special notice when the rising curtain revealed the three famous monkeys, Max, Moritz and Akka, seated at a table in the forefront of the stage partaking cheerfully of a light meal, served by their two male keepers. The real fun commenced when, excused from supper, they scaled the heights of the netted enclosure, used the tight rope ae a trapeze and toyed playfully with the other items of vaudeville equipment. They were a cheerful trio—Max, the big fellow, in white masculine attire; Akka, adorned as befitted a lady monkev, in a feminine creation of pink, and Moritz. the baby of the party, displaying a saucy patch on his nether garments. They certainly demonstrated that if man is but a little lower than the angels a monkey at his best approaches closely to the stage where human intelligence begins. Even Sir. Darwin, could he see these representatives of their kind, would be pardoned for saying, "I told you so." Akka, most especially, is irresistible. She glides along the tightrope with the grace of a Blondin, and handles the gloves ably against Max. In the imitation of a jazz band the honours are well divided between Moritz, with the cymbals, Max, with the big drum, and Akka, with a stringed instrument. The grand climax, however, is in combined display of bicycle riding. This alone is worth going a long way to see. The audience, highly appreciative throughout, at this stage broke into loudest applause. The turn was a great one. For a the monkeys will be in Auckland.
