LONDON, September 5. The Metal Markets. (Quotations on Sept. 1 in parentheses.) Copper.—Spot, £54 15/7% (£54 13/1%); three months, £55 5/7% (£55 3/1%) Lead.—Spot, £21 17/6 (£22 8/9): three months, £22 8/9 (£22 17/6). Spelter.—Spot, £27 2/6 (£27 5/); three months, £27 13/9 (£27 7/6). Tin.—Spot, £289 12/6-(£288 7/6; three months, £284 7/6 (£284 2/6). SUrer.—Standard, 25% d (25% d) per oz; fine, 27% d (27% d). Wheat. Wheat cargoes are dull at 3d easier, owing to lower week-end cables from America. Parcels had a poor response at 3d decline. Liverpool futures: October, 10/8% per cental; December, 10/9%; March, 10/8%; May, 10/6%. Bradford Tops. The market is quiet. Spinners are receiving a few more particulars, but there has been very little new business. The Price of Gold. The price of gold is 84/11% per oz. Rubber. The stocks of rubber are 65,162 tons. The Dairy Produce Board has received the following market report from its London agency, dated September 2:—

Butter.—New Zealand, salted 174/ to 178/; unsalted, 176/ to 182/. Market firm, with upward tendency. Australian, salted 170/ to 174/; unsalted, 172/ to 178/. Irish creamery, salted, 166/ to 168/; unsalted 170/ to 172/. Argentine, unsalted, 170/ to 174/. Dutch, unsalted, 174/. Esthonian salted, 166/ to 172/; unsalted, 170/ to 172/ Latvian, 168/ to 170/. Siberian, 150/ to 154/, up to 156/. Danish, 182/ to 184/. Retail prices are advancing on Monday to Danish, 1/10, Colonial, 1/9. Cheese.—New Zealand, white and coloured, 95/ to 96/. Market firm, with good demand. Canadian, finest white and coloured, 96/ to 97/, up to 98/. For Canadian, c.i.f., 97/ is asked,* but buyers are not operating. Australian, finest white and coloured, 92/ to 93/. English, finest farmers', 112/ to 118/. Retail prices unchanged.

Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co. have this day received the following cable from their London house, Trengrouse and Nathan, Tooley Street:— New Zealand butter, 178/. Cheese, 98/. Both markets, firm. LONDON WOOL SALES. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 5. At the wool sales on the 13th, 124,000 bales will be offered, of which new arrivals will be Australian 34,500, and New Zealand 41,000 bales. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report having received the following cablegram from their London house, dated September s:— Wool.—The list of arrivals closed on the sth instant. The quantity available is:—Australian, 34,500 bales; Cape, 2000; New Zealand, 41,000; South America, 12,500 bales. Carried forward, 34,000 bales. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 5. The Sydney wool sales opened with keen competition, which was well maintained at last week's closing rates. Good clearances were effected in all grades. CHICAGO WHEAT VALUES. (Received 10 a.m.) CHICAGO, September 6. Wheat for delivery in September is quoted at Chicago at $1.32% per bushel. For December delivery the rate is $1.37%, and for March $1.40%. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CANTERBURY MARKETS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The potato market maintains the weekend position. The dispatch of the Wingatui with about 1500 sacks more than expected has not affected the position to any extent, but, on the other hand, the Waipiata from Timaru took about a thousand sacks. less than the earlier estimate. Inquiries are coming forward for shipment by the Katoa, which is booked to leave on Thursday, and by later boats. The Katoa's complement is expected to be small. October deliveries have recorded a 2/6 improvement, some business having taken place at £5 12/6, due to North Island inquiry. The wheat market has firmed up, both for milling and fowl wheat. Little milling can be bought at less than 6/4, on trucks, for Tuscan, while fowl wheat is quoted at 6/7, f.o.b. for September, and up to 6/9 for October. Growers who have their wheat in store are holding, generally, until nearer the end of the year, when the shortage, if such exists, commences to manifest itself. There is no change to report in the oats or seeds' market.
