FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY.

PROFIT SAID TO BE LOW. TIME LOST BY EMPLOYEES. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. In addressing the Arbitration Court yesterday, Mr. T. O. Bishop, representing the Dominion footwear manufacturers said the value of manufactures last year had been £1,225,698 and the cost of production £1,099,087. The gross profit was therefore 16.7 per cent on the £750,000 which was invested in the industry. Out of this interest on the capital cost of land, plant and buildings, income tax and overhead charges had to be met, and the profit was low. In the year which ended on March 31, 1925, the time lost by 200 male employees was 25,888 hours, and by 108 female employees 7215 hours. The average number of hours lost per week per employee affected was 9.94 for males and 10.29 for females.
