WHAU BRIDGE CRASH.

TAXI GOES INTO TIDE.

SOMERSATJXT IN MID-AIR. DIVE OF TWENTY FEET. Crashing through the railing of the Whau Bridge, between Avondale and New Lynn about 6 o'clock last evening, a Checker taxi-cab somersaulted into the tide 20 feet below. Two paaeengera, Mr. S. Fenton, of 16, Golf Road, Epsom, and his daughter, Mrs. H. G. King, of Henderson, and the driver, Mr. Harry Deverell, were shaken and slightly injured. The three occupants waded to the shore. Mr. Fenton suffered injuries to the chest, and Mrs, King, to her foot. Mr. Devereil had a severe cut on one of his thumbs and abrasions to an eye. After receiving medical attention, he waa taken to the hospital. Hia injuries were not serious and he left the hospital tJii3 afternoon. Light rain was falling when the accident occurred. Visibility was poor, and investigations l>y the Avondale police later showed that there was a wheel mark for aume distance inside the wooden guard of the bridge. The, taxicab crashed through at a point about half-way across, and carried away 25 feet of the railing. It somersaulted and dived into the stream below. The tide was out and there was little depth of water.
