LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
ROOPE ROOSTER COMPETITION DEFEAT OF THE CHAMPIONS. MABIST TOO GOOD FOR NEWTON. Saturday saw the start of the Roope Rooster competition, the games being played in bright sunshine with underfoot conditions that enabled the salient features of the code to be demonstrated. Marist had all the better of the play against Newton and won easily, the City and Richmond match had to be prolonged to find the winners, while Ponsonby defeated Grafton Athletic, the latter making, a. good showing against formidable opposition. As the result of the games Mariste, Richmond, Ponsonby and Devonport will enter the next stage of the competition, which i» on the knockout principle.
