A LONG-LIVED PEOPLE.

According to the latest statistics quoted by the "Medical Journal," New Zealand is the healthiest country in a world that is steadily growing healthier. The ground for this conclusion is that the average age at death for both men and women is higher in this country than anywhere else. In New Zealand the "expectation of life" for the average man is nearly 63 years, and for the average woman 65 years. In America the average for both sexes is 58 years, and in England and Wales the average for females is 60 years, while for males it falls as low as 56 years. From these figures we may draw highly complimentary inferences as to the conditions of life that prevail here, and the people of New Zealand may well be proud to know that while we have the lowest rate of infant mortality in the world, the chances of a prolonged life at the other end of the scale are far better here than in either Britain or the United States. The "Medical Journal" says that in thirty-three years expectation of life will actually be two years more than the "allotted span." In New Zealand by that time, it' we go on as we are doing, it may be still higher.
