METROPOLITAN TROTS.

BOLD BID BY AUDACIOUS. PAYS TALL PRICE IN AUGUST HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The August meeting of the Metropolitan Trotting Club opened to-day. The weather was fine arid the track in fast. order. The totalisator handled £37,058, as against £30,708 last year. There have been some wonderful races at Addington, but the contest in the August Handicap must rank with the best. There were twenty-one runners, and over the last mile at least, sixteen of them had a -winning chance, being closely bunched, the winner, Audacious, paying a, big dividend.

The August Handicap ( £1000), the big event on the card, provided a wonderful race, and with half-a-mile to go, practically the whole lield was bunched. The favourites were Terence Dillon and Dalnahine, bracketed, and Tom Thumb, and both were right in the picture till a furlong from home. In fact, there were a dozen iu it then, but Audacious, in the centre of the course, and Imprint right on the outside, drew out and fought out a great finish, Audacious getting the verdict by a head. He- was bracketed with Trenand, but paid nearly one-third of a century. Imprint was unfortunate in that in a big field he had to. go on the outside all the way. St. Maura led for nearly a mile and a-half, then Tom Thumb showed out. in front, but he was being driven hard, while there were a dozen on his wheels. Man o . War and Logan Chief finished well, but nothing did better than Talent, who ran third after skipping at the start and losing a few lengths. He should go well next time. Peterwah, who was bracketed with Cardinal Logan, put in two bad breaks and settled his chance, while Cardinal Logan got on the fence behind the bunch, and never got a run. The winner, Audacious, is one of Hooper's team, but has not raced for a long time. He ran second to Nelson Derby in the Auckland Cup of 1925.
