WORLD'S TENNIS.
COCHET WINS SINGLES Miss Wills Too Good For Senorita de Alvarez. UNCANNY PRECISION. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 0 a.m.) LONDON, July 3. At the Wimbledon lawn tennis tournament yesterday the chief events were the finals in the men's and women's singles championships. In the former event Cochet defeated Bnrotra and in the latter Miss Helen Wills (America) defeated Senorita de Alvarez (Spain). Borotra and Cochet fought yie usual French "marathon." The defender in the third 6et looked bound to win. He was leading s—l, but like Joffre, Cochet "kept on nibbling." He made some amazing recoveries and got his countryman rattled. How wonderful was Cochet's triumph is shown by the fact that in the eighth game the match point was against him six times. All Borotra's acrobatic volleying close to the net went for nothing. Cochet chased and got them. Some of his recoveries were unbelievable. Even in the final set Borotra was 5—2, but Cochet came with crushing speed and simply tired out his bounding, swift-footed rival. Many in the crowd declared that when Borotra in the final set led 5—4, 40 —30, Cochet double hit the ball and was him- ! >elf doubtful and appealed to the umpire, I who decided in his favour. Speed, uncanny precision and sometimes almost unwomanly force were the secrets of Miss Helen Wills' easy defeat of Senorita de Alvarez. The loser was never of the same calibre as the American girl. The chief results of yesterday's matches were:— Men's Singles. Final. Cochet defeated Borotra, 4—G, 4—G, 6—-3, b 1, t —s. Women's Singles. Final. Miss Wills defeated Senorita de Alvarez, 6—2, 6—4.
