HIDES UP IN PRICE.
THE GROWING OF FLAX.
SPECULATORS BUSY. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") 1 DtJNEDIN, this day. J "That the increased prices obtained f yesterday for cow hides in Dunedin were caused by the tanners themselves," was the opinion expressed by a representative of an exporting house. "The market," j he added, "was manipulated by tanners j for their own purpose, to justify their rise in the price of . leather. The rise was \ anticipated. The tanners took about 80 t per cent of the offerings, and they set prices consequently. The exporters were forced, in some instances, to pay extreme rates in _ order to fulfil their obligations to their clients. They were caught short on their supplies for sales which had been made forward. It did not follow that the prices obtained for the particular flat* of hide were going to rule at next J sale —probably they would recede to their j former value." «
