BOWLING.

THE CHALLENGE MATCHES. CLOSE CONTESTS LAST WEEK. (By TRUNDLEFO If the donors of ilie two inter-club challenge trophies had 'been present last week to see the matches played, they would botli have been well satisfied, for on each occasion a very interesting and close contest was seen. On Wednesday the West End holders of the Dcnison Pins stood, up to a strong challenge from Fonsonhy, and as it was a beautiful day a good many members of the latter club were in attendance, in anticipation of a good game. They were not disappointed, for although their clubmates flattered their hopes by establishing a lead of seven at half-time, the second part of the game was so close that the winning skip had to draw the shot with his last bowl to hold the trophies, the game ending:—West End (holders), R. G. Cox, F. A\ise. C. E. liardley, Irving, Clarke 20, v. Ponsonby (challenge), E. Farrow, E. Harkins, B. Hilton, Arthur Parsons 19. On resuming after a cup of tea. West End got rid of their deficiency of seven by scoring two fours in succession, and a very cloSe run found them equal on the eighteenth. l'onsonby then got three, which A\est End equalled on the twentieth head, leaving tlie last to decide. Harkins was playing a vcrv tine game, and both his counted, but liardley got rid of theiu with a drive, having also the good fortune to push the jaok over to two of his own side, one >n front and tho other close up behind. This was tho position when the skips went up, and Clarke was content to hold it by putting in a block. However, it went a bit too far, and Parsons played a beauty, finding a narrow port to reach the back counter for shot. Clarke now had to assume the aggrcssi\e, and luck rather favoured liiin. Determined to bo up, lie just grazed a bowl in his track sufficiently to turn his own into the head. It rubbed off his front wood, and still had enough pace to pull up on Parsons' shot bowl and count. Parsons trie<' to recover it a second time, but dropped short. Altogether it was a really game, and some of the spectators were of opinion that it was the best that fcne Ponsonby skip has played for quite a long while. His team supported him well, possibly Harkins doing most execution, but West End were verv solid and well deserved their win. This makes a run of six wins, which has only once before been equalled since the" competition was instituted in 1923. The equal record was put up in the following year bv an Auckland rink (11. I*. Wyatt, G. J. Mackav, E. A. Craig, A. J. Parker),' who captured them from Ponsonbv. and -then defeated Carlton, Dominion ' Road, St. Helicr's, West End, and EUerslie, finally losing them to Onehunga (C. Lindberg. G. A. Court. E. B. Wright, W. Hills). 1 lie last-named team got five wins, but on several occasions a team has had four wins. Next Wednesday the challenge is from J. S. Kilgour (Carlton), and if End win again they will create a new record for tnis challenge. The Edwin Stars, on the other hand, have often been held longer than through six inatcnes, on one occasion a team holding tnem for several vears. Recently, however, they have gone round much faster, the only really long run lately being seven wins last year for Auckland (H. J. Wyatt. L. Whittle, J. C. Duncan, A. J. Parker). Last Saturday the game was marred by a Heavy green and threatening weather, and at one time the players had to adjourn to the pavilion to escape a shower. They just managed to finish before another downpour, Kookes playing a half-drive with his last bowl, and picking up the jack for a tie. Carlton (holders). D. Guy, Deare. J. S. Kilgour, A. G. Fookes IS, v. EUerslie (challengers), A. C. Hill. J. A. Godfrev, F. Osborne, J. Taylor is. EUerslie led off well, but Carlton got a five on the fifth head, and another live on the seventh, establishing a lead, which they held until the thirteenth, when they were 15 to 7- EUerslie then recovered, and they looked like winning by two points until the Carlton skip played his last bowl. Next week's challenge is from J. Morgan (Devonport). In connection with tho order of matches for the Edwin Stars, an interesting suggestion has been made. It will be remembered that three years ago a new system of challenging was instituted by Mr. T. R. George (Epsom). Prior to that time a club could put in any number of challenges, and when Mr. George took over the list ho found that three clubs had more than enough entered to monopolise the matches for another year. He, therefore, made a new list, with only the first challenge from each club, all second and later challenges going on a waiting list, from which they were transferred in turn to the permanent list as soon as their clubmates dropped out. This has given almost universal satisfaction, the turn of each club coming round in a little less than a year, but it has led to a peculiar result—the clubs remain very much in the same order, year after year. For instance, last Saturday EUerslie were defeated, and before the evening was over another challenge was in from the same club. The previous Saturday Grey Lynn dropped out, and another team was entered from tho same club during the evening. Next Saturday it is Devonport's turn to play, and whether I they lose then or later on, they have already a team on tho waiting list ready to take their place. The suggestion has been made that to change the order a little more than it is already changed through a club getting several wins, all the names left in at the end of the year should be drawn by ballot for the following year, and if anyone has a better suggestion than this, for improving an exceedingly popular challenge, it will be appreciated. CLUB GAMES. In spite of heavy rain on Saturday considerable progress was made on most of the bowling greens. On the Carlton green there was a splendid match for the Edwin Stars. The Ellerslie challengers were lving the game when the Carlton skip" (A. G. Fookes), with his last bowl shifted the "jack," and on a close measure scored the one point to give him a tie. As it was a challenge match Carlton retained the trophies. On the Dominion Road green the rain prevented the section play from bein<» completed. There are still six teams in the running, and the completion of the tournament is postponed till next Saturday. Results were as follows:— RAWHITI GREEN. McGregor Stars.—Scelly, Eaves.
