Confirmation has been received of the escape of a number of natives awaiting trial on the charge of murder in New Guinea. They cleared out while in charge of a native warder at Rabaul gaol, and so far have eluded capture in the bush. A cable from Pans says that "Le Matin" publishes a statement that two French soldiers were seriously injured in an affray with eight young Germans at LachenspeyendorlT A message from London says that sentence of six months' imprisonment was passed on Sir Gerald Wiltshire for the attack on Miss Jean Olds, in vhich the girl was tied to a tree and coated with boot polish in a wood in the early hours of the morning. \ Calcutta cablegram states that over KOO persons were murdered in Burma last year. Crimes involving robbery with violence increased by 24 per cent. A number of crimes were attended with grea* savgerv. Although the Government of Burma has paid over £17,000 to secure the liberation of slaves, only thirteen per cent of those freed have availed themselves of the privilege. In connection with the Manitoba elections, a cable from Winnipeg says that the Premier, Mr. J. Bracken, and his Progressive Government were returned to power for another five years by a substantial majority. Voters indicated that they desired a continuance of Government'control of the sale of beer, and defeated a proposal to empower brewers to deliver beer direct to the holders of permits.
