WATER METERS.
As a ratepayer of Mount Eden, I hope mr fellow ratepayers will note and seriously consider the statement made by Mr. J. Carlavr, our old expert superintendent of water supply to the City Council, as to the real uselessuess of water meters for residences, published in the "Star" of the 25th instant. Personally, I consider the burying of £3 10/ in each home allotment is a silly and scandalous waste of money, amounting'in the aggregate to a very large sum, for which absolutely no return'is obtained, and a dead loss, making for additional cost in our homes and causing many disputes as to the reliability of the meters. The striking of a rate on thc'value would sava all this and keep the money in the country and district, where the rate and saving could be used for general purposes. The objection usually is that A uses more water than Bi and therefore should pay more. If this bad any value, the saving in employment of meter readers and cost of making out separate rate notices would level matters. Meters for factories are on a different basis. This is another instance, fellow ratepayers, of th# advisability of joining up with the city.
