SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
Mrs. A. M. McGowan was the guest of honour at a farewell tea at Tudor Tea Rooms on Thursday afternoon given by the Rawhiti Croquet Club. Mrs. McGowan wore a smart navy blue suit, blue felt hat.
Mrs. McArthur gave a luncheon party yesterday afternoon at the Grand Hotel as a farewell for Mrs. Peter Buck. The table was decorated in violet, mauve and pink. The frocking was the latest winter modes.
A large muster of Gill Guides, about 800 in all, will parade at the Town Hall to-morrow for the annual church parade. The Mayor will preside, and the service will be taken by the Rev. D. C. Herron. M.C., assisted by the Rev. Beaufort and Rev. Vealie. The splendid body of young girls who form the Guides, and especially the little Brownies, will make an attractive display.
The Rev. Mr. Patterson and managers of Somervillo Ptcsbvterian Church, Remuera, gave a tea party at Tudor Rooms on Thursday afternoon to wish bon voyage to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. McGowan, who have gone for a holiday to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr. McGowan was presented with a gold fountain pen. Miss E. J. McGowan acoinpanics her parents.
A very successful bridge evening was held at the Victoria League rooms on Monday, the (sth instant, in aid of the funds for the Rev. Jasper Calder's Winter Fair. The twenty tables were fully occupied, and the games were keenly contested and thoroughly enjoyed byall present. The prizes for the two highest scores were won by Miss Mowbray and Dr. Williams. The hostesses were Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Spencer White, Mrs. Webster, Mrs. Anstiss, and Mrs. Harrison.
Miss Tremain presided over a very good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Xorthcote Women's Progressive League on Thursday. Mi's. Mitchell, on behalf of the Mother's League, explained the objects of the society and hosv it differed from the Mother's Union. Dr. Mildred Staley gave au interesting and instructive address upon the Howard Penal Reform League, showing how its members sought to prevent degeneration of offenders by the development of the probation and after care system, classification of delinquents and reform in criminal jurisdiction. .She urged her hearers to do all they could to assist this worthy cause.
A social evening took place 011 Thursday night in the Municipal Hall, Newmarket, when Mrs. 3JOIIU Lee, wife of the member for Auckland East, was presented with a silver entree dish by the ladies of the Auckland East district, and a beautiful bouquet of violets from the children. The gift was a small token of appreciation from the women of the district for the social service rendered by Mrs. Lee and as a mark of the respect ill which she is held. As vice-president of the A.E.8.L.P., Mrs. Mnrv Dreaver made the presentation. Miss Hilda Davies, on behalf of the children, presented the flowers. The hall was prepared for dancing and the stage beautifully decorated with palms. During the evening items were given by the Ramblers' Orchestra, vocal solos by Misses May Bain, Elsie Bentlev, Messrs. G. Barnes, J. Hutton, and Jacob Elliott. M iss Mary Thomson acted as accompanist.
