DEPLORABLE.

WOMEN OUT OF WORK.

RUSH FOR BILLETS

(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.")

DUNEDIN, Tuesday.

At the unemployed meeting to-day Mrs. Bennett said, "I would like to see an emphatic protest made against the paying of lower wages. It is deplorable to see so many young women out of work. I recently applied for a position at the Medical School, and I might tell you it was a very 'mean' one, the wages being 1/3 per day, and yet fifty-two women applied. Many of the applicants were young girls who had been thrown out of employment by emigrants." She would like tot see what she described as the "French system" adopted in New Zealand, under which preference was given to those with encumbrances.
