WAGES FOR RELIEF WORK.

LOWER KATES DEFENDED.

REFERENCE BY MR. COATES.

(By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) DARGAVILLE, this day. In a short address at Fukehuia last night the Prime Minister referred to the rates of wages paid to men on unemployed relief work. Mr. Coates said experience had shown that if the ordinary rates were paid the men stayed there. The Government could not afford to keep them. The normal roll of the Public Works Department was about 8000, and he thought that was enough. At present about 13,000 were employed. He took full responsibility for what was being done and if any man wanted work it was available—not permanent work, but something to help him over Ms difficulty.
