LOCAL POLICE STRENGTH.

The news that the local detective staff is being strengthened by five officers from the South will do something to allay anxiety about burglaries. There have been a large number of these crimes lately, but neither their number nor the fact that many have not been followed by arrests is a reproach against the police. The detective branch has long been working with a strength far below the needs of the city. Last year there was a similar outbreak of crime, but the police coped with it successfully, and there is no reason to suppose that when they are reinforced they will not make headway against the criminals who are now operating.
